Solutions to Mental Health

No one denies that people can have difficult problems in their lives, that at times they can be mentally unstable. Mental health care is therefore both valid and necessary. However, the emphasis must be on workable mental healing methods that improve and strengthen individuals and thereby society by restoring people to personal strength, ability, competence, confidence, stability, responsibility and spiritual well-being.

Here are some suggested alternatives...

Ensure competent examination by a non-psychiatric doctor to determine if any underlying undiagnosed and untreated physical condition is causing a mental problem.

Ensure children are tested for lead toxicity, toxic poisoning, allergies or other physical problems that can manifest as learning or behavioral problems.

Ensure children fully understand what they are learning in school and determine if tutoring or missing educational basics such as phonics are needed.

Why "The Chewy Blog"?

It may be too late to now be explaining why I named my blog "The Chewy Blog" after it's been up for 6 months but I thought the number of people that ask for clarification and or give me weird looks or laugh, think it's because of Chewbacca from Star Wars (http://starwars.com/databank/character/chewbacca), or jump to some other wrong conclusions has prompted a quick explanation/clarification.

Actually it's very simple and many have probably figured it out but the word chewy - as soon as you consider is being used figuratively - makes sense. Especially when used in such expressions as "chew over", "chew the fat", "chew out" or "bite off more than one can chew".

For example "chew over" means to think about or discuss something over a period of time. Therefore something "chewy" is something to think about or discuss. Like my blog.

Anyway, there you go. Keep chew'n.

Real Life Stories of Drug Abuse...

"During the whole time I was on drugs I destroyed everything I had built up and fought for in my life. I cut ties to all my drug-free friends and disconnected from my family, so I hadn't any friends but my drug mates. Every day revolved around one thing: my plan for getting the money I needed for drugs. I would do everything possible to get my amphetamine—it was the only thing in my life."
— Pascal

How to talk to youth about drugs is often puzzling or appears impossible. This is why for over twenty years The Foundation for a Drug Free World has conducted the largest worldwide community-based drug education campaign. Based on experience and success, they have created a new Truth About Drugs Education Kit. The kit contains ten well-researched pocket-size individual booklets with factual information about the most abused drugs, including real-life stories and a study guide. (find out more >)
